Fortified Hill of Kolonos. The final stand of the 300!

The Fortified Hill of Kolonos marks the dramatic site where the last moments of the Battle of Thermopylae unfolded. Surrounded and vastly outnumbered, King Leonidas and his remaining Spartan warriors retreated to this small, rocky hill for their final, defiant stand against the Persian army. Today, visitors can walk the same ground where courage triumphed over fear and where the legacy of the Spartans was sealed in history. The hill offers a striking view of the surrounding landscape, allowing you to visualize the narrow pass as it once was. A commemorative plaque inscribed with ancient verses stands as a somber tribute to those who fought and fell here, reminding all who visit of their unmatched bravery and sacrifice. “Oh, Passerby, tell the Spartans that here we lie, obedient to Spartan laws.”
Colonus (Kolonos), the highest mountain in the world!
In the 1st century AD, the Neopythagorean philosopher and leading mystic of antiquity, Apollonius of Tyana from Cappadocia, visited Thermopylae to pay homage to the famous site. Then he was asked which was the highest mountain, and he disarmingly replied:
“The highest mountain is Colonus (Kolonos) because on it faith in law and noble self-sacrifice erected a monument of human virtue whose pedestal is here and whose summit is in the stars.”
